Audience at an outdoor music festival

Commute hours versus late-night listening

The same music streaming app can host two different listening cultures before breakfast and after midnight.

Morning commute sessions in Malaysian cities tend toward shorter tracks, higher shuffle use, and fewer playlist completions. Late-night sessions stretch longer, lean on mood mixes, and punish abrupt autoplay transitions into high-energy singles.

Why cohorts matter

Averaging all sessions into one retention chart hides the split. When we brief product teams, we separate weekday 07:00–09:30 listening from 22:00–01:00 windows before recommending shelf changes. A home module that thrives at night can frustrate commuters — and the opposite is also true.

A restraint worth keeping

Do not rebuild the entire home shelf for one daypart until you have at least two comparable weeks without a major festival release distorting the picture.
